CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Diagnose malfunctions, maintain, repair, install, test, develop and fabricate patient care, life support, and clinical laboratory equipment and apparatus for use in health care facilities and other patient care related areas. Provide technical support to health care professionals, clinicians, and technologists involved in patient care. Repair malfunctioning patient care life support equipment during emergent situations.

This series is distinguished from the Media Maintenance, Computer Maintenance, and Electronic Technician series by working in a health care facility on patient care, life support, and clinical laboratory equipment and apparatus for use in patient diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and life support.

BASIC FUNCTION

Perform entry-level biomedical electronics work troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, installing, testing and calibrating a variety of analog and/or digital biomedical electronic instruments, apparatus, and equipment used in a health care facility.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under direct supervision, receive on-the-job training and perform routine troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, installation, assembly, and testing activities such as conducting electrical safety inspections; testing and calibrating patient scales, centrifuges, incubators, baby warmers, etc.; performing preventive maintenance; repairing and fabricating patient cables, simple electronic circuits and assemblies related to patient care.

TYPICAL WORK

Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, calibrate and test mechanical, electro-mechanical, electronic equipment or apparatus such as patient scales, centrifuges, hypothermia units, incubators, blood warmers, bone drills, cast cutters, infusion devices, electronic thermometers used in patient care;

Use electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes; digital multimeters; function generators; calibrators; electrosurgery and safety analyzers; defibrillator testers, RF watt meters to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions to system, board, or component level; use computer-aided diagnostic software to locate malfunction(s);

Perform mechanical or electro-mechanical repair(s); perform electronic repairs to system, board, or component level; calibrate and/or test for proper operation;

Perform preventive maintenance and/or electrical safety inspections on basic patient care and clinical laboratory equipment; test adjust, and calibrate to federal, state, and local electrical and fire safety standards;

Construct simple electrical circuits or assemblies designed by others for use in patient care or clinical areas involving soldering components to circuit board, connecting boards to power supplies, and fabricating enclosures; use hand and power tools such as drill presses, grinders, band saws, soldering guns, desoldering stations;

Assist senior level technicians in the installation of patient care or clinical laboratory equipment for use in health care facilities;

Use proper biohazard (e.g. AIDS and hepatitis) and radiation (e.g. X-ray and isotope) practices while performing duties including special hospital procedures in operating rooms, delivery rooms, immuno-suppressed patients, etc.;

Confer with faculty, staff, clients, vendors, students, and/or supervisors in determining equipment problems or fulfilling service requests.

Evaluate medical equipment and prepare reports and documentation for unusual incident equipment malfunctions;

May order, stock, and store patient care and/or clinical laboratory equipment parts;

May repair malfunctioning patient care life support equipment during emergent situations;

May direct the work of others;

May perform limited maintenance or repair on computers;

May create and maintain database files for equipment inventory;

May develop methods and procedures for proper operation of electronic equipment;

Perform related duties as required;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An Associate's Degree in Biomedical Technology OR equivalent education/experience

Certification by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) as a candidate.
