IMAGING TECHNOLOGIST- MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING

BASIC FUNCTION

Perform invasive and/or non-invasive diagnostic and interventional procedures and/or examinations in a clinical setting utilizing complex magnetic resonance imaging for cross-sectional anatomy and angiography. Participate in training medical residents, fellows, students and staff. Recognize and respond to emergent and life-threatening situations.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Independently perform clinical and research studies and examinations in therapeutic radiation or Magnetic Resonance Imaging involving the knowledge and use of cross-sectional anatomy; operate complex imaging equipment; guide and monitor patients through procedures; administer contrast pharmaceuticals; maintain incoming information flow about patients and outgoing information about study results; and participate with physicians in designing study techniques for each examination.

TYPICAL WORK

Operate imaging and related equipment to perform exams in Magnetic Resonance Imaging;

Perform specialized radiation therapy procedures with documentation of calibrations, tumor localization and quality control programs before delivery of therapeutic doses;

Counsel patient regarding safety factors and risks of examination; explain and obtain patient release to participate in examination;

Administer and inject contrast media and pharmaceuticals;

Administer prescribed sedation to patient under physician direction;

Recognize and respond to life threatening situations which may occur during diagnostic and/or interventional procedures;

Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation as necessary;

Execute standard calibration procedures; establish and document quality control of equipment;

Observe computer monitor displaying patient data during examination; alert physician of abnormalities; maintain daily log of procedures performed;

Determine additional study and examination techniques when abnormalities are present;

Orient and provide information and instruction to medical residents, fellows, students and staff who are rotating and/or assigned to the specialty area;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Satisfactory completion of formal technology training in an AMA-approved school, AND three years of technical imaging experience OR registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)

OR

equivalent education/experience.

Certified by the State of Washington as a Radiologic Technologist.
