Specification for Class of
DATA PROCESSING SUPERVISOR 2 (03740)
Definition: Supervises data processing personnel performing data entry, computer input scheduling and/or computer operations functions.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
D. P. Supervisor for data entry:
Supervises a group of 12 to 34 data entry operators which may or may not include positions at the lead or supervisory level; or supervises a group of data entry operators consisting of three or more lead operators (or two leads and one supervisory).
D. P. Supervisor for scheduling:
Supervises a five- to seven-day single-shift group of Computer Input Schedulers (as a first-line supervisor); or acts as supervisor during regularly scheduled periods to help cover a six- or seven-day operation.
D. P. Supervisor for operations:
Supervises a five- to seven-day single- or multi-shift operation consisting of Computer Operator 1 and/or 2 positions (data entry operator positions may also be included).
Definition of terms for allocation purposes:
"Function"...one of three areas - Computer Operations, Computer Scheduling, or Data Entry.
"Multi-function"...more than one function with two or more subordinates in each of at least two functions.
"Multi-shift"...more than one shift with two or more subordinates on each of at least two shifts.
"Six- or seven-day operations"...at least two subordinates working on the 6th or 7th day.
Typical Work - Data Entry Assigns, coordinates, supervises and review functions or staff of operators engaged in data entry and verifying data relative to agency operations or programs;
Established and maintains controls and production schedules to regulate volume and accuracy; devises and initiates routing, data entry and verifying procedures;
Maintains attendance, production and accuracy records and control sheets;
Selects and trains or supervises training of new operators in correct use of equipment and data entry procedures; confers with operators and supervisors on various work problems;
Consults with data processing personnel on new programs and program changes;
May supervise clerical personnel engaged in related activities;
Performs other work as required.
Typical Work - Scheduling
Plans, assigns and supervises activities of staff engaged in scheduling, staging, maintaining controls and distribution of production;
Schedules and coordinates processing requirements; resolves scheduling conflicts as required;
Establishes procedures for ensuring proper auditing and balancing techniques; determines reasons for aborted jobs and what action is to be taken;
Performs other work as required.
Typical Work - Operations
Plans, assigns and supervises all activities of staff of data processing operators and clerical employees;
Develops and maintains work schedules and determines priority of report production; plans and controls optimum utilization of equipment;
Initiates and implements necessary work controls and production devices within limitations of established procedures;
Analyzes complex operational problems referred by subordinates; studies present procedures for improvements;
Participates in long-range planning and procedures work to meet new and changing work demands;
Diagnoses cause of machine malfunction or failures; makes adjustments or corrections or obtains maintenance service;
Performs other work as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: operation and application of data processing equipment; methods, principles and practices of applicable data processing systems, procedures and processes.
Ability to: plan, assign, supervise and coordinate work of data processing personnel; develop new and improved methods, techniques, procedures and forms; initiate and implement work controls and production devices; establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships within unit(s) and with other sections.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or GED equivalency.
AND
Three years of experience in data processing, one year of which must have been at the lead or supervisory level.
Note: Up to one year of applicable experience and/or training with specific equipment or discipline (e.g., scheduling, data entry or computer operations) may be required as substituted for up to one year of stated requirements (per MSR 356-26-130 certification - selective - when permitted)
