PHARMACIST  (53670)

Definition: Performs essential distributive pharmaceutical functions in operating a hospital, correctional facility, or extended care facility pharmacy.

OR

Within the Department of Health, Board of Pharmacy, conducts inspections of pharmacies, drug manufacturers, drug wholesalers, precursor chemical outlets, researchers and other licensed firms. Conducts investigations of health professionals in cases of suspected or alleged violations of laws administered by the Board of Pharmacy.

Typical Work

Operates hospital pharmacy; compounds, manufactures, labels, and dispenses drugs and pharmaceutical preparations;

Fills prescriptions for drugs and pharmaceuticals; maintains prescription files;

Prepares estimates; requisitions, receives, and stores drugs, pharmaceuticals, instruments, dressings, apparatus, and surgical supplies;

Keeps records of alcohol and narcotics received, on hand, dispensed, and on order; maintains perpetual inventory of all drugs and surgical supplies; prepares periodic reports for attending physicians and supervisors;

Keeps medical supply room and pharmacy secure, orderly, and in sanitary condition;

Prepares and standardizes solutions and other preparations for use in research work conducted by members of medical and dental staff;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: standard practices followed in compounding, filling, labeling, and distributing medical prescriptions; various drugs, pharmaceuticals, and other medical supplies and solutions used in compounding and dispensing drugs; pharmaceutical arithmetic; medical terms; classification of drugs according to their action, use, and dosage; hospital procedures related to drug supply work; use of weights, measures, and other dispensing devices; record keeping and inventory procedures.

Ability to: operate hospital pharmacy; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with hospital staff; follow technical oral and written instructions.

Minimum Qualifications

A valid Washington State license to practice pharmacy or eligibility to obtain license prior to employment. Permanent appointment will be contingent upon obtaining a valid Washington State license to practice pharmacy within 90 days following appointment.

OR

Positions within the Department of Health must have a valid Washington State License to practice pharmacy and two years of pharmaceutical experience as a licensed pharmacist.
